Imagine coming back from your first vacation in years, heading to your hometown to visit family, and getting a call from a stranger who’s going to ask you annoying questions for an hour. That was the situation as I spoke to Noel Fisher, who was in Vancouver after a week in tropical paradise. Luckily for me, Noel is a lovely guy with an easy laugh, who doesn’t mind working in the US after starting out in his native Canada.

“it’s been a while since I’ve worked in Canada,” he says, “but how to go about making good stuff in the States and how to go about making good stuff in Canada doesn’t really tend to differ as far as my experience. … The size makes the difference, I guess, because Canada has, you know, the entire population of Canada I think is about the same population as just California. … In Vancouver you might verb up against, you understand, maybe 10 or 15 other people and in Los Angeles you’re going up against And probably going up against a bunch of people in New York as well!”

The audience really has a lot of affection for these two characters. What kinds of interactions include you had with "Gallavich" fans?

NF: Some really hip moments I've had possess been just walking around on the street and having people run into me and recognize me from the show.

EF: Are they scared of you?

NF: They think I'm a lot tougher than I am. But I've had several people talk to me about how this kind of a story, being told in this way, is kind of a first and how that's very important to a lot of people. As an actor, that's like the pinnacle of what you want to be doing, and Shameless is amazing for letting us be a part of this kind of a story. It's been pretty awesome.

CM: Yeah, right from the start there was really positive reaction, both online and in person. Especially online. That component has really exploded over the last five years. You can't view every single message, but you try to gaze whenever you can, and it's amazing to verb the excitement and the passion people have for it. Ok. I’m going to be a petite more Doylist here than I usually am, because we’re talking about what the writers are thinking. And I’m also going to take this opportunity to share this fascinating article from the AV Club in When Fan Engagement Goes Wrong. Everyone beware, it contains significant spoilers for The But it’s also largely about Gallavich, the fact that online promotion of Shameless leaned strenuous into the popularity of the couple, and were up against it when Noel left. I’ll quote: 

“[Supervising Producer Shelia] Callaghan’s choice to be honest and straightforward when engaging with fans is admirable, and yet also on some level futile. She can’t say them exactly why Fisher chose to leave, she is (logically) unwilling to spoil future storylines outright, and she can only speak her own mind as part of a collaborative process over which she holds only some influence. So while many fans respect her endeavor to maintain the connection to this now marginalized community, others attack, reinforcing that attempting to handle these situations is a full-time
