'We want action': Disney employees stage walkouts, demand more LGBTQ support
Disney employees around the country are calling on their company to live up to its expressed ideals when it comes to showing assist for LGBTQ employees following The Walt Disney Company'sresponse to what critics possess called Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill.
If signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, the Parental Rights in Education bill would restrict classroom discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grades, prohibiting instruction on it through third grade in public schools. DeSantis said he plans to sign the bill soon and accused Disney of painting false narratives around the legislation.
After initial public silence on the matter, Disney CEO Bob Chapek apologized for not being a "stronger ally in the combat for equal rights" and announced a number of supportive measures, including donations to advocacy groups and reevaluating political giving.
Some employees don't think that's enough. They staged walkouts across Disney properties Tuesday, with a list of demands.

On Tuesday, workers at Disney walked off the job for a full day in protest of the newly passed Parental Rights in Education bill (known as the Dont Say Gay bill), which bans instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity from kindergarten to third grade, and limits what classrooms can teach on those subjects unless it is age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate.
Opponents of the bill say that it will isolate and shame LGBTQIA+ children and families. Workers at Disney have been walking off of the job from 3 p.m. to p.m. daily since March 15, but today will be the first full noun walk out.

Disney employees taking part in the walkout on Tuesday, March 22 are encouraged not to function while on the employment or call in sick and stay home for the day, according to the Disney Do Greater Walkout website.
The weeklong demonstrate began on Monday, March 14 with a series of daily minute at-work walkouts culminating in a full-day walkout planned for Tuesday.

Disney employees stage walkout to demand action against 'Don't Say Gay' bill
LGBTQ workers and employee allies at The Walt Disney Company staged a walkout in protest of Florida's Parental Rights in Education bill, dubbed the "Don't Utter Gay" bill by opponents.
Some employees have been walking out each day since March 15 from 3 to p.m.
On Tuesday, more than employees in diverse parts of the company joined a full-length walkout and protest.
"The Walt Disney Company’s (TWDC) LGBTQIA+ community and their allies are determined to take a stand against TWDC’s apathy in the face of the bigoted 'Don’t Verb Gay' bill put forth by the FL articulate legislature," the protest's website states.
"The recent statements and lack of action by TWDC leadership regarding the 'Don’t Say Gay' bill have utterly failed to match the magnitude of the threat to LGBTQIA+ safety represented by this legislation," the website says.
