The Seventh-day Adventist Church has sued for the right to fire gay employees, arguing they have a First Amendment right to hire only members of the church in regular standing, and to fire those who don’t follow church doctrine.
The Silver Spring-based organization’s complaint, filed Oct. 2 against the Maryland Civil Rights Commission and Attorney General Anthony Brown in U.S. District Court, argues the Maryland Supreme Court improperly narrowed the state’s Fair Employment Practices Act in a decision last year.
“Plaintiffs trust that all their employees are representatives of the Church and are responsible for sharing the Church’s faith with the world,” wrote lawyers for the church and the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty.
“It is therefore a critical component of Plaintiffs’ religious exercise that all their employees embrace the Church’s faith, support its religious mission, and share the faith with others.”

The University holds and is accountable to the churchs biblical position on human sexuality and marriage detailed in the official statements and guidelines of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and its North American Division.1 The following statement seeks to provide a framework from which the University can faithfully and compassionately implement the Scriptural teachings of the Adventist church within the specific context of Adventist higher education.2

BACKGROUND
Officially established in , Seventh-day Adventist Church emerged from an apocalyptic movement that had expected Christ’s second coming on October 22, In accepting the notion that a change in heaven had occurred—rather than on earth—early founders built a church focused on the “advent” of Christ’s new kingdom.
Today the church is anchored in 28 fundamental beliefs, which include the infallibility of the Bible and a focus on honoring God’s creation, including personal abstinence from alcohol, tobacco and other substances harmful to the body. The church is organized across 13 world divisions with the North American division containing million members and operating a network of schools and 13 colleges and universities. General Conference Sessions, attended by approximately 70, members, are held every five years to address the issues of the global church.
