Open daily, the Center provides a wide variety of LGBTQIA+ programs and services including crisis counseling, individual and couple counseling, facilitated coming-out groups, and over a dozen LGBTQIA+ peer aid and rap groups each week. Additional social, educational and cultural events, and information regarding community resources, as well HIV testing, counseling, and substance abuse information and referral are available. All of The Center's programs are transgender-inclusive and supportive, but they also give services designed specifically for the transgender community through Project TRANS, the Transgender Services Program. Project TRANS (Transgender Referrals, Assistance, Networking, and Services) offers discussion groups, behavioral health services, HIV prevention services, yoVisiting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered San Diegos Past and Present
San Diego has a vibrant, visible, and vocal lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. For a taste of it, Hillcrest is a great place to start. For 40 years Hillcrest has been an epicenter of social activism as well as a safe harbor for those pressing against accepted social norms.
A great reference point is the historical landmark red and colorless “Hillcrest” sign on the corner of Fifth and University Avenues. One block south, past several bookstores, sits the Brass Rail at Fifth and Robinson. The Brass Rail, once located downtown, was straight by day but gay by night. In the s the Brass Rail moved to Hillcrest as a gay bar and kick-started the transformation of Hillcrest into San Diego’s preeminent “gayborhood.”
