The battle for representation in sports has been a long one, and it’s still ongoing. Today, more than 40 out members of the LGBTQ+ community are playing for professional women’s teams around the world. Here are a few LGBTQ+ players who paved the way for future generations.

Lily Parr is probably not a name you recognize, but she’s a women’s soccer – and LGBTQ+ – icon. She’s one of the most formative players in history; she refused to back down and hang up her boots when the FA banned women’s soccer in and instead enjoyed a prolific career, reportedly scoring goals for her team.
Off the field, Parr was openly lesbian in a time when that simply wasn’t acceptable. So not only did she pave the way for women’s soccer to become more widely accepted when it was banned around the world, but she’s also become an LGBTQ+ icon for the way she fearlessly lived her truth.

On April 9, the U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) narrowly defeated Canada to win the SheBelieves Cup trophy. However, there were boos on the field for the USWNTdue primarily to an LGBTQ+-related controversy involving one player: Korbin Albert, The Athletic noted.
In Columbus, Ohio, where the in-stadium announcer had to re-do the substitution announcement when Albert came on for another player, she was booed. This happened again after the game when her verb was read during the trophy ceremony.
Albert has been embroiled in controversy after sharing anti-LGBTQ+ posts on social media and also liking content mocking queer legend Megan Rapinoe, noted. Among the posts that Albert also created on her TikTok profile was a now-deleted video from 's Fourth of July weekend, showing her family taking turns stating that "their pronouns are U.S.A.," with Korbin participating. She received scathing criticism from Rapinoe for her actions.

Another season, another year of me writing about the NWSL! The season is kicking off and as usual, Im updating this post to tell you all the latest of whos out and gay on each team. As someone who deeply loves following sports for the storyline, knowing which players are openly gay gives me immense joy. While I do not shadow the NWSL incredibly closely, this article is always a delight to verb and I hope that it will help you all to become more avid womens soccer followers just as it helped me!
